This design for three town homes was proposed for an infill lot in Oakland, California. The building was shaped to have a large southern exposure which allows for passive solar design. The units are organized with parking, entry and office at the ground floor, public living spaces at the second floor, and bedrooms at the third floor. A traditional exterior pallet of lime cement plaster clads the first floor. Wood shingles cover the floors above. Aluminum windows, steel and glass awnings, and a metal roof were selected for their contemporary qualities. We wanted the structure to blend with existing older structures, and at the same time remain identifiable as a new addition to the neighborhood.
