STUDIO G & S ARCHITECTS / Annalakshimi

Annalakshmi is a vegetarian restaurant supporting the work of a service based non-profit organization located in India and Malaysia. Studio G+S volunteered to help the restaurant prepare a proposal to convert the former parachute shop at the Presidio into a restaurant and art gallery. Large custom light fixtures, inspired by lotus blossoms and the shape of parachutes, are suspended throughout the space. They define smaller, lower intimate spaces within the existing concrete structure; diffuse light from a new large ridge skylight; and provide sound absorption for a quieter dining environment. A raised platform is also used to create smaller, more intimate spaces within the large building volume. Recycled eucalyptus planks are used as flooring and wall cladding. Mantras are engraved into the planks and encircle the room.
